The solar project subsidy in Maharashtra is managed by MEDA. Maharashtra’s installed solar energy capacity now accounts for more than 1800 MW and rooftop solar is near 230 MW. It has the fourth-highest installed rooftop solar power generation capacity across the country. The state is strengthening its policy of providing financial assistance for using solar energy in cottage and micro industries.
Subsidy/Support is available from Central Government through MNRE.
To facilitate solar rooftop generation, the state developed a net metering framework, with the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission issuing its Grid-Interactive Rooftop Renewable Energy Generating Systems Regulations in 2019. These regulations allow for the levy of grid support charges on the generated energy under net metering systems. The charges are intended to recover balancing, banking, and wheeling cost after adjusting RPO benefits avoided distribution losses, and any other benefits accruing to the licensee.
The Maharashtra State Cabinet has approved the draft policy ‘Unconventional Energy Generation Policy 2020’ to be adopted by the Department of Energy to promote non-conventional energy generation in the state.
The agency responsible for implementing the policy will be the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA). The policy proposes to deploy 17,385 MW of renewable power in the state by 2025. Of the 17,385 MW, solar projects of 12,930 MW are proposed, wind capacity of 2,500 MW, cogeneration projects (1,350 MW), small hydro (380 MW), solid waste (200 MW), and 25 MW from new technology-based renewables. There is also a proposal to provide 100,000 agricultural pumps every year to farmers for the next five years. It has also proposed to invest between ₹850 billion and ₹1 trillion to help create jobs.
The state intends to provide solar power connections to 10,000 houses annually and to reduce power outages. Through the policy, it hopes to address power outage issues and pollution in the state due to rapid industrialization and urbanization.
the state of Maharashtra has about 1.6 GW of operational solar projects and about 1.2 GW under development as of September 2020. The state ranked fourth in terms of rooftop solar installations in the country, representing 9% of the total installed capacity as of Q1 2020.
The subsidy available on the installation of grid-connected solar rooftop power plants is 30% of the benchmark cost. Government institutions including PSUs shall not be eligible for the subsidy. Instead, they will be given achievement-linked incentives/awards. All residential and institutional buildings such as schools, health institutions, etc. and the social sector can avail CFA.
Required documentation is needed to submit to MEDA online by a developer on behalf of the eligible customer. Following the provisional approval, the completion report needs to be submitted. After that site visit and site inspection is done by the officials. After all these formalities, the subsidy amount is directly deposited to the customer’s account within 2-3 months of issuing the grant letter.
